By combining the expertise of the AVL group, AVL DiTEST and Piezocryst have created a novel product for tuning shops, garages, as well as all motorsports. The combination of Piezocrysts’ sensor know-how with the systems knowledge of AVL DiTEST enables us to create an inexpensive, easy to use measurement and diagnosis system for cylinder pressure by determining essential engine parameters for performance improvements or diagnostic testing.
The system is based on sensor solutions that utilize the existing engine bores and thereby enable a fast and simple assembly. To achieve this, the pressure inside the cylinder is measured by replacing the glow plug in diesel vehicles by a compliant mounting pressure sensor and the sparkplug in gasoline engines by a pressure measuring sparkplug. The measurement provides a variety of information such as compression or maximal pressure. It also detects irregular combustion in gasoline engines (such as detonation and preignition) and in combination with the crank angle signal, the position of fractional mass burn (e.g. crank angle to achieve 50% mass burn), the indicated mean effective pressure, or the torque-time performance of each cylinder.
This data facilitates the optimization of the engines settings by updating the ignition and injection parameters such as full-torque, performance or response characteristics. Similarly, the engine diagnosis testing ability improved in areas where a clear error assignment to the engine or electronics was difficult to determine.
By combining the most advanced sensor technology with the specific evaluation and analysis functions of AVL DiScope, for the first time a high-quality indicating technology becomes available for motorsports teams and garages. The hardware is specifically geared to the particular requirements regarding size, cost, and manageability. During software development the main focus was on user friendliness by maintaining a presentable interpretation and documentation of the recorded measurements. Now, measurements are intuitively possible in stationary as well as in mobile operating mode.
